With Redwood forests and the Santa Cruz Mountains lining the landscape north of town, Santa Cruz offers both a cozy cabin destination in the wilderness and a livelier getaway in town, where the beach boardwalk and bustling downtown district draw lots of visitors. A series of state parks located between highways 1 and 9 show off the mighty coastal redwoods: Portola Redwoods, Butano, Big Basin Redwoods, and Henry Cowell. In this area along Highway 9, you can find woodsy resorts with rustic cabins, as well as private cabins and tiny houses for rent. In town and on the beach, it’s more cottages than cabins, but plenty are available for rent if you want proximity to the surf and local bars and restaurants. It’s a very popular region in the summer, so plan ahead, or consider visiting another time of year when the weather is wetter and cooler.
